According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB) announcement dated 4 November 2026, the Union Cabinet has approved an additional two-year engagement period for the 75% of Agniveers who are not selected for regular employment after their initial four years of service.

The revised arrangement aims to provide better career opportunities and a pathway towards regular enrolment in the Defence Forces.

Under the revised arrangement, the service and selection process will work as follows:

4 Years Initial Agnipath engagement
25% Regular employment based on merit

Why Has the Government Introduced These Changes?

Following four years of implementation of the Agnipath Scheme, the Defence Forces conducted an assessment of Agniveers' performance.

The assessment highlighted their:

  • Physical fitness and discipline.
  • High motivation and morale.
  • Technological adaptability.
  • Professional skills and competitive spirit.

Based on the positive feedback and recommendations of the Defence Forces, the Cabinet approved the additional engagement period.

What Does This Mean for Future Agniveers?

This is a significant development for young candidates interested in joining the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force.

The revised arrangement provides an additional two years of service for willing Agniveers who are not selected in the initial 25% regular recruitment process. It also creates a further opportunity for regular enrolment after six years.

Important Note: Regular enrolment is subject to willingness and fulfilment of the prescribed selection criteria. It is not automatic permanent employment for everyone.
